In a world where perfectly curated Instagram feeds and TikTok shopping hauls flood our screens daily, it's easy to forget that the endless scroll often comes with a price — literally. Social media platforms, once meant to connect us, have transformed into virtual malls, enticing us to buy things we never knew we needed.
I will be honest and say that I too have fallen victim to overconsumption. Your entire social media feed is nothing but influencers spewing information about what it takes to be an “IT girl”, the things you need to reinvent yourself, the videos of people organizing their home by taking laundry pods out of the containers they’re in to put them in a different, more “aesthetically” pleasing container, and not to mention the “Amazon must haves” hauls, it becomes overwhelming.
When does it ever end? Does it ever end? How can a person resist the temptation of overconsumption?
Listed below are tips I have used to help me de-influence myself and overcome overconsumerism.
Take a social media break.
I do this so often. It’s a great way to decompress and in a way get back in touch with reality. Your brain isn’t overstimulated with hauls, must haves, and IT girl propaganda.
Consider your lifestyle
This is important when making any purchase. There’s no need for you to own 20 pairs of the same workout sets in different colors if you do not work out on a consistent basis.
Always consider what you already have first.
Shop your closet, look through old lipsticks and makeup products and repurpose the items you already have in your possession!
Comparison is the thief of joy
Stop comparing your life to others and stop trying to keep up with the Joneses.
Social media can be a powerful tool, but sometimes, stepping back and detaching from it all is okay. Together, we can build a more sustainable future!
