Five Ways To Stop Doom Scrolling

By Taylor Hollands

For college students, doom scrolling – that mindless, endless scrolling through bad news and social media – has become a common habit. However, it’s not doing any favors for mental health. This behavior increases stress levels, makes students feel constantly on edge, and significantly impacts attention spans and dopamine levels.

Doom scrolling often starts innocuously with a quick news check but can quickly lead to hours of screen time, disrupting sleep patterns. Social media exacerbates the issue by fostering unhealthy comparisons and a pervasive sense of inadequacy. This habit not only drains energy but also prevents students from engaging in activities that promote well-being.

Phone addiction is easier to fall into than many realize. So, what can be done instead? Here are five great ideas to break free from the doom scrolling cycle:

1. Join a campus club – Whether it’s something exciting like a book club or learning more professional development  like PRSSA Memphis, being part of a group gives you purpose and helps you meet new people is a great way to break away from the screens!

2. Exercise – Hitting the gym or even just going for a jog gets those endorphins flowing and clears your mind.

3. Study in a new location – Take your textbooks or laptop to a coffee shop or the library. Changing the scenery can boost your focus.

4. Read a book – Reading for leisure has become increasingly less popular over the years! Escape from the real world and dive into a story. Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, your brain will thank you.

5. Explore your city – Check out a local museum, park, or just wander around a part of town you haven’t been to before! Local Memphians can check out this list by  Jalyn Souchek for “I Love Memphis.”

Lastly, here’s a bonus tip: Reading blogs like this one (shoutout to Meeman 901!) is a great way to stay engaged and learn something new. Plus, you might find more inspiration for things to do instead of doom scrolling!

So next time you find yourself reaching for your phone, think about switching it up. Try one of these activities and see how it changes your vibe.
