Music and Advertising: Listening Between the Lines

Updated: Oct 18

Have you ever been stopped during a leisurely stroll through TikTok because of the jarring or suspenseful music from an advertisement? Has a YouTube ad ever made you feel empowered through extravagant music? If so, you could be on the receiving end of the “undeniable power of music”!

Music can be an extremely vital part of a successful advertisement due to several scientifically and empirically backed factors. One example of the power of music can be recognized in the brain’s memory bank. When you hear a song during an important or notable moment in life, you attribute that song to that instance. Similarly, an advertisement with a catchy jingle or memorable tune can sneak into your memory bank, making the ad recognizable.

Lia Peralta, an author for Save the Music Foundation, states in her blog post, “It’s

natural for the human brain to associate specific types of music with an object, a place, or a person. Advertisers use music in commercials to create an association between a piece of music that captures the viewer to make them associate those sounds with their brand.” Peralta shares similar aspects of music in advertising in her blog that correlate with sources all over the internet.

These sources all corroborate the idea that companies see these factors and implement specific songs for certain ads to persuade customers into purchasing an item, inform customers about their services, create brand loyalty, and evoke/elicit an emotion, action, or response from customers.
